The Dawn Of Steel
(Nuclearmageddon Records)

DAWNPATROL is a very unknown band from France, somewhere in the region of Aquitaine. Starting in 2011, they released one demo and one EP before producing this first full-length, "The Dawn Of Steel". Their sounds and influences are deeply rooted in the early / mid 80s, when cult bands like VENOM, SODOM, HELLHAMMER, BATHORY and BULLDOZER forged the style that will be called Black / Thrash Metal after more or less a decade. Infact it was performed at its best by great acts like GEHENNAH, AURA NOIR, DESASTER, ABIGAIL, DESTROYER666, GOSPEL OF THE HORNS, NIFELHEIM during the 90s, and it still does by other band like CRUEL FORCE, TOXIC HOLOCAUST, BUNKER 66, INSULTER, BLACKEVIL, BULLDOZING BASTARD and so on, so DAWNPATROL try now to go towards the same direction. The album is composed by eight songs that last on average length of four minutes and a half, plus intro and outro. So my first comment is that they should have cut at least a couple of songs. By doing this, they would have had some faster and more immediate songs to counterpose to the articulate ones. For what concerns their songwriting, they rely on raw riffs and minimal drumming, with a huge dose of repeated parts. The lead guitar work is really modest, to say it clear: it would have been too basic even for the 80s. Nowadays guitar solos should be played with a good technique or at least with an aggressive use of Floyd Rose tremolo. Still on this very important issue of playing guitar in a decent way, I can add that the general songwriting is really primordial and weak. Few good ideas often lose concreteness, most of the riffs are terribly unoriginal and the vocals of the singer V. Wolfstorm is a triumph of monotony. Maybe I haven't discovered the hidden side of DAWNPRATROL, but there are too many bands (I have mentioned enough names before) which are much better or have a stronger musical personality and I don't think that these French guys can compete with them at the moment. However, try to give them a chance! For more DAWNPATROL information check out the following sites:,,
