No, no MORBID ANGEL worship here - people familiar with the German underground will remember GODS OF EMPTINESS as a pretty happening Death / Grind band. Back then the band used to be influenced by the likes of TERRORIZER and NAPALM DEATH, a formula which hasn't been changed with the release of "Consumption Is Freedom?". GODS OF EMPTINESS still play brutal Death Metal infused Grindcore along the lines of the aforementioned classics. Some elements of basic Hardcore / Crust riffing also have found their way into the mixture. When the band slows down, the heavy riffing definitely has a BOLT THROWER vibe to it (the ending of 'Unknown Truth', for example). "Consumption Is Freedom?" is clad in a nicely thick but balanced underground production that gives the guitars enough power. The drums seem to be at least partially triggered but do not sound like a typewriter. One can also find the "classic" vocal division of one deep throaty grunt kind and mid-pitched screams / croakings with the strong emphasis being placed on the low end. Both styles work but personally I prefer the deep vocals much more, especially when parts of the lyrics are in German as in 'Weltkrieg' or 'Im Westen Nichts Neues' as the croaking sounds too much like shitty German Black Metal. Parts of 'Nihil' (also in German) made me think of AUDIO KOLLAPS even though GODS OF EMPTINESS are less crusty by far. One can find two tracks which are rather "fun" based, those being 'Columbo Is God' (obvious I think) and the album closer 'Tribute to Mundl' which will only make sense to persons from Southern Germany or Austria. Track number 8, 'Music For Masses' incorporates partly distorted drum loops and sampled synth parts and is intended to be a comment on casting shows et cetera. As one may glance from the titles of the album and several songs the lyrics mostly deal with social criticism on various levels. This also extend to the cover "artwork" and there the trouble begins... no problem with artworks that strive to convey a message in a straight forward way - but shit, at least a tiny bit of talent is necessary! What one can see here is a boring staged photography coupled with sub-par Photoshop manipulations. I don't mean to be unfair but both the shitty cover and the boring layout are deterring (even the often used and overused war imagery would have been better that this... and you know how bored I am by tanks and such stuff). Apart from the visual side there is nothing to criticize, if the latest releases of DEAD or DEAD INFECTION appeal to you more than technical US Death / Grind or you cannot get enough of old NECRONY records and miss the times when SANITYS DAWN were a good band... then there is a band you should check out (ignore the cover heheh). www.godsofemptiness.de
