KARG
KARG
Weltenasche
(Art Of Propaganda)
71:46min

KARG from Austria are in its tenth year of existence back with full-length number five. Four (split) EPs and one demo are completing the band's discography. Quite a high output, especially if you have in mind the founder of this one man project is as well active in HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY, running a second solo project called SEAGRAVE (debut was released last year) and accordingly works as live musician for SCHATTENLICHT. The band's name KARG can be translated with terms like barren, without comfort or meager. But the music during the more than 70 minutes is pretty opposite to such terms. The first and most remarkable element is the use of the local idiom of the native region of the songwriter. For me it is quite astonishing how good the symbiosis of dialect and Black Metal works. Well, LUNAR AURORA did this before ("Hoagascht"), but back then I was also surprised how naturally the combination of language you only got to know from Folk music works with Black Metal. The second notable discovery is the fact, that the music, despite the long running time, is just not getting boring. Simply because typical Post Black Metal riffs are combined with rather orthodox tunes and the drums are constantly speeding up the pace. So there are moments of depression and gloom but also of impelling self-empowerment. Of course this would be a just to plain songwriting, ingredients like piano melodies, samples and unplugged guitars are added. Complex, but at any time comprehensible. Some so-called Post or Avantgarde Black Metal bands are overloading their music with decoration and different components and that is exactly why I do not like such music. But KARG are at every time aware of the song or the idea behind the song and therefore writing real music, not an accumulation of gimcrackery and cheese.
