POSSESSOR
City Built With Skulls
(Slaney Records)

"City Built With Skulls" by POSSESSOR is the latest offering by the Irish based underground label Slaney Records. This US five piece hails from Suffolk, Virgina and delivers us 13 tracks (incl. the obligatory intro and outro) totally dedicated to the glorious days of Thrash Metal. Unleashed from Hell in 2009 the horde released some appetizers in form of two demos and a split CD together with three more bands. Of course POSSESSOR will neither invent the genre new nor deliver something ground breaking but that's also not the intention here. What you get on this small little silver disk is 100% pure, honest fucking Thrash Metal which was made to thrash your guts out and let you headbang like a total maniac. Intense, violent tunes with wild leads and razor sharp guitar riffs, sometimes on neckbreaking speed but yet some skilled tempo changes. The quintet also tries to keep the album varied as much as possible by integrating cool gang shouts and some varation in the vocal department. Singer Robby Rainey combines aggressive Thrash vocals with high pitch screams which we all know from many mighty US Metal bands. An awesome mix - like US Metal on stereoids. The talent is there as well as the right attitude. So in my humble opinion this squad truely belongs to the stronger acts of the new generation of that style. The feeling and atmosphere is also quite authentic and really breathes the spirit of the long gone past. "City Built With Skulls" makes a lot of fun to listen to and excellent tracks like 'Champions Of Chaos', 'Metal Meltdown' or the great title track prove this with class and generate a lot of energy. I really don't care about this retro discussions - and to be honest: I prefer much more such new intense releases than half baked comeback albums of legendary 80s bands which just ruin their hard earned good reputation. If you are a Thrasher and worship the 80s you can't do anything wrong by adding this cool album to your collection. For further info visit www.slaneyrecords.com or www.facebook.com/possessormetal.
