SHADOWS LAND
SHADOWS LAND
Ante Christum (Natum)
(Osmose Productions)
37:36min

This first full length is not easy to get into. When I heard the opening track, I felt discouraged to continue. But be assured it was a deceptive impression, this is only that the SHADOWS LAND music needs a little effort to get into. Basically you can compare this Polish band (yes... another one) to their country mates of YATTERING, because of the complexity of their music, mostly based on very intricate rhythm patterns, especially the drums draw a sort of strange sonic architecture. In fact some tracks may sound disorientating to a distracted listener. SHADOWS LAND bend and distort the traditional brutal Death Metal frame to offer in the end a very personal and captivating music. They achieve the exploit of communicating a sense of catchiness while their arrangements stay very adventurous and sometimes disjointed. The vocals are one of the strongest points to notice on this album as guitarist Aro deliver them without falling into the trap of the banal growling, he chooses instead what I like to call the "imprecation mode", screams in low key if you prefer. To sum it up, I am glad to have discovered this band, and I can only recommend this one to you. SHADOWS LAND have a lot to offer. My advice: don't care too much about the first track (the weakest of this disc), and about the very uninspired cover art too (again a goat's skull, what a sense of imagination) and concentrate yourselves on the surprising music of SHADOWS LAND. A stellar effort. Contact: www.shadowsland.metal.pl, satypos@poczta.onet.pl.
