THACLTHI
THACLTHI
...Erat Ante Oculos
(Unholy Domain Records)
54:21min

There is this track called 'What's That Noise?' by S.O.D. and that was exactly my first thought listening to "...Erat Ante Oculos". What the hell? To be honest, I quit listening after a few minutes. This happens not very often, I am used to listening to Grindcore, Noisecore and lo-fi Black Metal and mostly I like this kind of stuff, although I can not listen the whole day long to ANAL CUNT's 5643 song EP or DARKTHRONE rehearsal tapes. With a break of two days I gave this release a second chance and, as usually in life, the first thought is more often than not the proper one. The album starts with a nearly seven minutes long atmospheric track, maybe to introduce some dark and occult and gloomy vibe, but for me it is just boring. Next up we have two songs with a playing time of more than 30 minutes. Cacophonic Black Metal, I guess that would be the best description. Sometimes it sounds like the guitarist and the drummer are not playing the same song, the vocals are somehow lost in this mishmash. At its best moments this output, by the way the debut by this Italian based duo, can be described as Drone or Drone Doom. Overstimulated low-frequency guitar chords mixed with free floating rhythms. Especially during the song 'Ixaxaar' there are some enjoyable of those droning moments. Last up is a cover tune of UNHOLY (Fin). Basically like the original, but with much more distortions. If you do not like the original you will not like this this cover version. Lyrically and conceptual the band is influenced by the Etruscan culture and language. So what is left to say? If you have a bias for for the above mentioned genre Drone respectively Drone Doom you may give this album a chance. If not, try listening to 'Ixaxaar', the most approachable song on this album. Personally I am glad finishing this review, so I do not have to listen to "...Erat Ante Oculos" once again. www.facebook.com/thaclthi, www.facebook.com/unholydomainrecs
