4 Doors To Death
(Unspeakable Axe Records)
47:45min

From this fantastic label comes a great way to discover 4 different solid bands at once. Before I dive into individual impressions, I have to point out that the packaging is definitely worth noting. The CD comes with an additional slipcase, and within are 4 separate booklets / folders for each band. Each folder features the full cover artwork of the band (which you only see a part of on the slipcase) as well as the lyrics and band related info - like picture(s), artwork, line-up, recording details etc. It goes without saying, a definite incentive to buy the physical version and a prime example to other labels on how to handle the packaging of a split release! Ok, first up is CEMETERY FILTH, a promising American old school Death Metal band. The band's straight forward, macabre riffing and early Dave Vincent style singing brings to mind SADISTIC INTENT. Continuing through the other two songs, Doom / Death segments collide with whammied solos and riffing straight out of early DEATH. A great start to the split. Next in line is ECTOVOID. These Americans also play in the ancient style, although theirs is more of a rotting INCANTATION vibe. Nasty and well-played stuff. If you dig PENTACLE, chances are you'll wet your panties to the next band, SABBATORY (Canada). Great job on those Van Drunen style vocals! Only two songs done by SABBATORY, one original and a cover of MORTUARY DRAPE ('Primordial'). Closing out the split is the US band, TRENCHROT. Presenting two originals and a cover of DEATH's 'Evil Dead', on display is yet another very solid Death Metal band in the old style. Boasting a crushing production, their varied sound and old Evil Chuck singing would make them a comfortable touring partner with say, HORRENDOUS. Although my personal taste has me voting for SABBATORY as the best of the bunch, there is not a bad band on this recording, and the above mentioned packaging really seals the deal for fans of genuine Death Metal. More information you'll find at the following links: CEMETERY FILTH, ECTOVOID, SABBATORY, TRENCHROT, www.unspeakableaxerecords.com
