Russian Death Metal Compilation Volume 3
(Darknagar Records / Satanath Records)
38:59min

Darknagar Records has dished out their latest Death Metal compilation featuring all Russian bands. I miss getting compilations as it was always good to hear different bands on one CD and always get a nice flavor for the bands' sound. I have to admit I have not checked out the previous 2 volumes of the Russian compilation, however, this should be a good place to start. Kicking off the compilation is the band THE MUTILATOR with 'Lilith', a nice old school sounding Death Metal jam that has plenty of reminders of yesterdays. Slow and crunchy guitars and mid tempo drums. The guttural vocals are in the vein of Glen Benton's later work, but do a nice solid job. The song quickly picks up speed towards the end of the song, but all in all a nice start to the compilation. Next up is CORVUS LIVES AGAIN with the song 'Cheogh (Sleep, Ophelia)', a more melodic Death Metal song, but done nicely. Good production, solid songwriting, and good vocals. The variance in Death Metal styles on this album is a good thing. You get some slow Death Metal like THE CROWN OF CREATION OF NATURE, DANCING MOLOCH, MASS HYPNOSIS or COPROCUBES. You get old school sounding bands like CITIZEN X, DISTRAUGHT HOMICIDE:CLOCKTOWER SNIPER, MASS DECAPITATION, THE MUTILATOR, FOREST GUARD, SEIZURE OF THE GODS, SERVANT BREEDING or MENTAL TRAPS. And you also get the crunchy almost brutal Death Metal style with ...OF WRAITHS AND SALVATORY BLINDNESS, EXPERIMENTAL PARADIGM, ENDLESS FEAR or PRESS. The last band on this compilation ACID DROP has a nice mixture of old school Death Metal and slow Death Metal, but they quickly change up the tempo throughout the song. Catchy riffs and breakdowns really have the compilation finishing up with a pop. The song isn't very long tracking in at under 3 minutes, but they do squeeze in a lot in that time. There you have it folks, 18 bands each showcasing their abilities and all under 40 minutes. I think this compilation is a good exposure for the Russian bands and for the label. This was my first time checking out a release from Darknagar Records and it seems they have a good roster on their hands. You can't go wrong with checking out this compilation / bands as they all brought something different to the table. For more information check out https://darknagar.bandcamp.com, www.satanath.com
