Born To Punish The Skies... A Deathmetallic Brotherhood In Darkest Mourning For God
Tribute To HEADHUNTER D.C (Vol.2)
(Mutilation Records)
79:04min

I guess it's safe to say that any band, that is being honoured with a tribute album, could be considered a big inspiration on a whole scene and influenced several bands that followed. Brazil's HEADHUNTER D.C. is definitely one of those bands! Not only because their origin dates back to 1987 already, but first and foremost because they wrote and released a whole bunch of killer songs in all those years and never betrayed their musical roots. How many great songs they really wrote is perfectly reflected in the fact that there's not only one, but already two tribute albums dedicated to their work. "Born To Punish The Skies... A Deathmetallic Brotherhood In Darkest Mourning For God" volume 1 and volume 2 come up with a total of 34 bands / songs (17 on each volume), and none of the songs had been covered twice! Since Thomas already reviewed volume 1, I can focus on the follow-up here, which is by no means any weaker. This time all of the bands come directly from Brazil (except for Mexico's NECROCCULTUS) and therefore you not only get some great cover songs, but also a very cool overview about the healthy scene of that South American country. The overall quality on the whole record is very high, no matter if you judge the bands by their musical or production qualities, so I won't go into detail with each one of them here now. Just let me tell you that ESCARNIUM are definitely my personal favorites on this one! They kick off the record very furiously and deliver a totally bonecrushing version of '...And The Sky Turns To Black...', setting the bar very high already. Another standout track to me comes from S.O.H. - their hellish version of 'God's Spreading Cancer' simply blew me away immediately! And the already mentioned NECROCCULTUS should get a mention from my side as well here as their version of 'Abortion Of Souls' definitely complete my unholy trinity of favorites. But since the overall quality is very high in general, just let me give you a list of bands that are also featured on this second volume: DIVINE PAIN, DISGRACE AND TERROR, VULTURE (don't know what went wrong with their recording - it sounds kinda strange), EMBALMED SOULS, APOKALYPTIC RAIDS, PATHOLOGIC NOISE, INCINERADOR, INSIDE HATRED, OBSKURE, SECONDS OF NOISE, ETERNAL SACRIFICE, DEFORMITY BR, FACADA and KETER. The thick booklet features liner-notes from HEADHUNTER D.C. guitarist Paulo Lisboa and each of the contributing bands plus a nice picture collage of fans posing with HEADHUNTER D.C. shirts, albums or whatever (done in the same way as the booklet of volume 1). So, to sum it up: this tribute album is not only an interesting purchase for any die hard HEADHUNTER D.C. fan, but also a nice compilation of South American Death Metal in general!
