Tribute To REPULSION
(F.D.A. Records)
43:48min

If you love REPULSION, you'll definitely want to hear this. It's chock-full of quality bands. What surprised me most about this, though, is that while these bands are no slouch in the speed and talent department (surpassing actual REPULSION BPMs on numerous occasions), few of them capture the vibe. For me, REPULSION's radioactivity is the key element - that relentless guitar with insane screeching solos, drum blasts that actually sound like a ride cymbal exploding, out-of-control bass disintegration and those hateful, acidic, trashy vocals. Only four or five of these bands pull that off in a reasonably acceptable fashion. What you get from the rest is clear, well-produced drums and a low Death vocal or Goregrind vocal. Instead of creating a flesh-peeling miasma of total energy like REPULSION does, one of them (and it's a big name to boot) actually sounds like they're falling asleep (or do I mean they're putting me to sleep with their lack of energy?). OK, I get it. They're updating REPULSION, dusting off this way-old stuff and bringing it into the realm of today's 'ultra-brutal' sound. Lame. None of these bands sound even remotely as wild as REPULSION did on "Horrified". Hmmm. I'm beginning to suspect my expectations are unreasonable and these groups simply couldn't recreate that intangible essence. While not a must listen, this is mandatory for the diehard REPULSION maniac who wants a refresher on why REPULSION still rules the world. Features GENERAL SURGERY, NECROMORPH, AFGRUND, FONDLECORPSE, COLDWORKER, IMPALED, MINDFLAIR, WORLD DOWNFALL, COLLISION, NASHGUL, GOREGAST, HAEMORRHAGE, CEPHALIC CARNAGE, LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER, INHUME, BELCHING BEET, CRETIN, MACHETAZO, BLOCKHEADS, HAEMOPHAGUS and GRIND CRUSHER. www.fda-records.com
