SLATER Metzgore (Cudgel Agency) 37:11min Insanity reigns on JACK SLATER's second album! Stark raving, hypertechnical but brutal Death Metal with maniacal vocals reciting totally lunatic German lyrics. All 9 songs combine blastbeats and groove parts with absolutely top-notch guitar work and should please every Death Metal fan. Even if you don't understand German (which is a pity in this case because you miss the hilarious black humour of the lyrics and the song intros) the outstanding technical performance will blow you away. JACK SLATER are high-quality madness for your tortured ears and since I can't find any shortcomings in their sound, I can recommend this album without hesitation. I was told by quite a few people that JACK SLATER manage to be even more intense on stage, so I'm really looking forward to seeing them performing live on the Krakfest in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany on April 23 / 24, 2004. Furthermore, JACK SLATER will be on tour with DIVINE EMPIRE, INCANTATION and MASTER in May and June 2004. Check out www.jack-slater.de for mp3-files, exact tourdates and nice pictures of their spare-time activities. Christoph Göbel BACK JACK SLATER Blut / Macht / Frei (War Anthem Records) 49:51min This record comes like a brainstorm(ing) out of my speakers: sick, twisted, varied, fast, sometimes groovy, twisted soli, strange, brutal, heavy, technical, deeep vocals. This is my first encounter with this German sickos and not a bad one! But in advance I have to say this is not really my cup of tea, and I don't even drink tea. But I have to admit that JACK SLATER come up with a very fresh version of brutal technical Death Metal. You simply hear that they put a lot of love and humor into their music with all its details and complexities. Yet this is no fun band. I think the only band you could compare them to is CEPHALIC CARNAGE for you just have to be a bit strange to write such music. On the other hand everyone into technical Death Metal should easily get into their music, the weirdness does not control the sound but adds something special to their music - DYING FETUS on a strange trip or something. Yes, it s hard to describe JACK SLATER's music and any comparison is doomed to fail after the next strange part but you will find a lot of strong parts to bang your head to! But bring a bit humor! As far as I know "Jack Slater" is the name Arnold Schwarzenegger had in his action-comedy "Last Action Hero" (yep... - Frank). And somebody who choses such a name for his band (if it is true) won't sing about dismembering women while having sex with them or other disgusting shit. The lyrics are (judged by the titles) completly in German, although singing-wise it does not really make a difference - but they seem to share the sick humor the name reflects and the music reeks of as well. So if you want something to happen on your record than go for JACK SLATER's third album and pay respect to over 10 years in Germany's underground! Good technical abilities and a heavy production will thank you! This is another sick high-tech band on War Anthem Records that could easily have been released on America's most varifed Metal label Relapse. Not bad! www.jack-slater.de, www.war-anthem.de Tim Klöcker BACK JANVS Vega (ATMF Records) 49:10min The Italian extreme Metal scene is currently experiencing their second dawn and ATMF is supporting this new era by releasing several good albums during 2008. For JANVS it seems that the word progressive is nothing less than the key essence of their doing and their second release "Vega" is a very interesting piece of music. The band is presenting seven songs which are raging from the dark side of the moon means the musical field occupied / invented by bands like PINK FLOYD to more Voices compatible areas of Black / Death Metal ('Mediterraneo').The band released their official debut "Fulgures" in 2007 and even if every band which is leaving the standard ways is currently connected with the scene giants OPETH think that nevertheless there are more than one parallel to our Swedish friends. JANVS are combining the base structure of traditional Black Metal with some spheric parts and "real" vocal plus a big portion of the beloved progressive drug but it works and "Vega" is a more than refreshing release. Think that "Vega" is showing a new side of the Italian underground with a band which a trying to combine old and new influences into a different Metal way of life. This automatically means that JANVS can't offer anything to the defender of the true Black Metal fetish but isn't our scene doomed to death without progress? www.atmf.net, www.janvs.it Matthias Auch BACK
After
15 years of activity in the underground Dutch JUDGMENT DAY finally come up up
with their second album “40 Minutes To Impact” – roughly nine years after
their debut. I remember one live show in Leer some years ago and I was quite
impressed by their Thrash-influenced Death Metal bearing slight resemblances to
older DEICIDE or MORBID ANGEL and that certain Dutch extra element… perhaps a
more European style of composition. The only aspect that marred the effectivity
of this great live band were some rather uninspired semi-melodic / technical
riffs thrown in here and there. And now back to the present: JUDGEMENT DAY
present us a mixture of old and new songs, dating from 1995 to 2002. To be
honest, the result is not really what one would called outstanding. Even though
there are plenty of cool moments in their songs - some groove, straight brutal
parts, thrashing riffs - the band still uses these above mentioned riffs that
sound neither really technical nor dark nor brutal, therefore leaving a mixed
impression… certainly no big impact on the listener, I am afraid. The
production itself (done by the band) is quite clear but could have been more
massive in my opinion as there are no technical aspects on this record which
could get drowned by too much distotion and punch. In a way this thin and
transparent production even underlines the weaker side of JUDGEMENT DAY which is
sad as the band has potential. I recommend you check these guys out in a live
situation which is much more impressing than this CD. Let's wait for the next
one… One question is left: When “New Aeon Media picks up talent (sic) from
the underground and supports new acts” then why did they sign this band? After
15 years of existence in the underground I wouldn't call them talents (rather
veterans, hehe) and certainly not a new act. Ulrich
