“Supergroup”, that’s how the label calls the band C-187 because of their bandmembers which use(d) to play in bands such as PESTILENCE, CYNIC, DEATH and MNEMIC. But is a group a supergroup just because of famous members or should the music itself make them a supergroup? Anyway, the C-187 project is initiated by Patrick Mameli, who was nothing else than the creative force behind PESTILENCE. I can’t tell you how much I love the PESTILENCE albums especially “Consuming Impulse” and “Testimony Of The Ancients”. The bassplayer of the latest mentioned album is Tony Choy who also played in CYNIC and is involved in this project as well and brought with him the great Sean Reinert on drums. Think there’s no need for further introduction. The singer Tony Jelencovich is singing right now in the band MNEMIC but was also involved in bands like B-THONG, TRANSPORT LEAGUE and M.A.N. Reading this infosheet I was highly enthusiastic especially when I read the name Patrick Mameli I felt that this has to be something special. And fuck yes, this is something special. For me unfortunately in a negative way. I have to admit that I was too narrowminded and starry-eyed to expect a follow-up to “Testimony Of The Ancients” though my disappointment was huge when I heard the first tunes of C-187. This is Jazz Metal or whatever, fuckin’ complicated, structures hard to follow and not really my cup of tea. To be objective I have to say that for fans who want to search for progressive music with probably the most talented musicians involved this is a must-hear for you. I tried it many times to listen to this album but from time to time I ask myself where the songs are. I only hear riffs, breaks, shouts and weird stuff. Not really something I would like to see persons from PESTILENCE and CYNIC involved. Sorry! I don’t know, call me close-minded to discover the genius on this CD, but I have to say that we are here at Voices From The Darkside and I guess that’s not the right music for the average Voices-reader. Persons who want to have their music complicated should give this recording a try anyway.
