COBOLT 60 is a two-men project from Norway founded in 2000 and consisting of (ex-) members of the better known BLOOD RED THRONE. The project released two full-length albums so far and “The Grim Defiance” is their second output released already back in 2012. The good thing in Metal is, it does not matter when you get to hear or review an album as the music never gets old. These guys play a filthy Thrash version of the Black Metal theme with some Death Metal tunes in it and Death Metal structures and songwriting as the fundament of their sound. “The Grim Defiance” consists of eight tracks crossing the borders of the mentioned styles. Not bad at all but also not leaving any real impression. Even though the vocals are grim and evil and some fines tunes can be located here and there, the songs do not leave much impression after giving the album at least four spins. The vocals are fine. The drum work and guitars as well, so technically nothing to complain about. Even the production is clear and powerful and very filthy, flattering the material. ‘Hammer The Creationist’ is the best track of the album, changing between fast and slow with a fine ending but also it shows, that this project has some good ideas but it feels more like a fun project of two friends jamming around a bit than a serious followed band / project considering the whole picture. Fans of Black Metal musicians, who like to write some thrashy tunes could check “The Grim Defiance” out, the rest will not really miss anything. www.facebook.com/cobolt60, http://cobolt60.bandcamp.com, www.demonhoodprod.com
