As a matter of fact, GOLGOTHA have been around for quite a while. The act debuted with "Caves Of Mind" in 1994. The sonic vision of these folks oscillates somewhere between THE SINS OF THY BELOVED (without violins, though), THEATRE OF TRAGEDY, LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE and MANDRAKE. Whether this is intentional with respect to their sound is a matter of speculation. Thus, GOLGOTHA's sound hits into the direction of mid-paced Doom Metal that was quite an influential phenomenon end of the 90s and apparently still is. The vocalist is consistent about his guttural vocals, which is - in a way - positive; the guitar-work is unspectacular. That is, with respect to the latter point, the output offers nothing but mainstream, straight rock-riffs, blatant quarter-notes and uninspired minor harmonies. The production of this oeuvre is smooth, crystal-clear, utterly lacking aggression. Suffice to say that this will be the decisive intention of the band - still, I do not appreciate it at all! When it comes to Doom Metal, I really want to feel doomed and don't want to be bored (as well as annoyed) by wah-wah rock soli and beautiful delay-filtered guitar patterns. Keyboard-patterns devoid of mysticism, obscurity and uncanny, sacral profundity are nothing particularly pleasing in terms of Doom Metal I feel bold enough to state here. Acts such as MY DYING BRIDE, ESOTERIC, old CATHEDRAL, old ANATHEMA succeeded to elicit what I would call an utterly melancholic and doomed feeling, a sincere delving into an underworld where perennial darkness and sadness dwell. This sombre emotion, however, GOLGOTHA do not succeed to elicit at all! Website: www.golgotha.ws
