Oh dear, I did not expect that. I always assigned Swiss based CHOTZÄ to the category of raw Black Metal. But what the band delivers on their fourth album is first-class Black Metal, which is far away from “Plump U Primitiv”, so the title of their debut, which translates to “clumsy and primitive”. The eight songs are neither one nor the other, but impress with sophisticated songwriting and the ability to combine different stylistic elements into a solid and compact piece of music. Influences from Black / Thrash Metal with a punkish attitude, hymnic and epic moments with clear chanting, doom-ridden and viscous up to melodic high-speed tremolo riffing. CHOTZÄ manage to do something that only a few bands manage in such an impressive way. Namely, on the one hand, to stay within the fixed boundaries of a genre, but within these boundaries to continually describe new paths without betraying the basic idea. Many bands have tried, many have failed. Another quality feature is the fact that all songs are on the same level; a loss in character is never audible. “Pächschwarz” will delight those who simply want to hear excellently played Black Metal, but also those who like to travel off the beaten path. The Swiss dialect used gives the album an additional touch of independence, the powerful and clear production sets the speakers on fire.
