Killer release from the German label Dying Victims Productions that launches the new EP from CUTTHROAT, a pretty young Death Metal band from Ireland. These guys are active since 2023 and the EP “Invoking Terror” is their third effort after two interesting demo tapes, released in 2023 and 2025. The style is rooted in the purest American old school tradition, but this is not the umpteenth and useless copycat of vintage legends that steals ideas left and right, because these five tracks have a clear identity both in terms of sound and song structures. The inspiring benchmarks are the very early frontline of US Death Metal from the ‘80s (NECROVORE, the formative years of MORBID ANGEL and SADISTIC INTENT), in addition to a Death / Thrash shade in the vein of “The Awakening” from MERCILESS and some Chilean Black / Death / Thrash vibes à la DEATH YELL and PENTAGRAM. The sound production is obscure and raw, which adds a very morbid and sick old school atmosphere to the final result, while still managing to ensure a perfect balance in the mix between all the instruments. The drumming is very incisive and brutal in the way it blends with both the thrashy and the more Death Metal oriented riffs, whereas the guitars abounds with Florida style harmonics and excellent shredding solos in the vein of Richard Brunelle and Trey Azagthoth. The vocals are pretty reminiscent of Dave Vincent, Chris Reifert and Jon DePlachett, not particularly deep and guttural, but aggressive in the right measure. Some parts have an AUTOPSY feel too, but without the doomy touch, this means that “Invoking Terror” is a form of primordial Death Metal that can be compared to a rotten mix of “Divus De Mortuus”, “Thy Kingdome Come” and “Critical Madness”. The stench of Death Metal putridity can be perceived from the black and white cover artwork, another excellent key point that can validate the quality of this EP along with the concept inspirered by Sumerian mythology, Lovecraftian horror and the Ancient Ones. The only bad thing is the short length of “Invoking Terror”, but hopefully CUTTHROAT are working on new material. This is the kind of old school Death Metal the scene really needed.
