GONE
Ancient Tales

I don’t know why it is mainly me who’s reviewing the real Doom Metal releases on these pages. Do I have a special magnet of Doom? On the other hand, I’m pretty sure that any Doom band is in good hands when I’m to do the review… As you might have expected, GONE is one of these bands who like it slow and heavy. Before anyone will get that wrong, this band is of course not the instrumental trio Greg Ginn of BLACK FLAG formed 30 years ago. These GONE are from my greater North German home area, Oldenburg to be precise, and started their quest for Doom in 2013. About two years later, the four piece entered a studio and taped five of their songs. GONE baptised these recordings “Ancient Tales” and this title automatically makes me and probably any other Doomer think of CANDLEMASS. What a misleading comparison is this? The music of GONE is far from being on the epic side of Metal, for it is influenced by Stoner Rock and more Psychedelic Doom, rooted in an early understanding of the genre. It’s of course BLACK SABBATH who are the godfathers not only of GONE, but of the whole Doom scene. Sometimes the forgotten German Doom heroes NAEVUS are also very present, especially in the opening ‘Mind Vacation’, while the more reduced sounding ‘Fighting Storm’ breathes some hot desert air. Of course GONE are able to speed up a little bit as well, like in ‘Elektrohasch’, a more Stoner inspired song. And with ‘Servant Of The Void’, there’s a little nod to the slower tunes of HELLHAMMER as well to the good old SAINT VITUS, the other godfathers of Doom. In the end, ‘Too Weak To Trigger, Too Strong For Chokes’ takes you on a pretty long psychedelic trip into the abysses of Doom Metal. In short words: this first offering from GONE is one of the most promising demos I heard in years, especially in the Doom Metal genre. Any lover of this special genre of Metal is advised to look for them at either http://gonedoom.bandcamp.com/releases or www.facebook.com/gonedoom to find out more.
