Far up from the north of Finland, crawls out this infamous and malignant beast known as GOREM. The band has been built around Tepa Kareen, former vocalist and bassist of the Finnish ‘Reindeer Metal’ messiahs A.R.G. (which have regrouped just recently for a few shows at least, by the way). GOREM, however, does not play ‘Reindeer Metal’ – or more commonly, a raw and aggressive Thrash Metal into a peculiar SODOM vein unlike A.R.G. did, but steps forward with a completely different armoury that is far more disturbing, frightening and murderous than one might expect from them in the first place. GOREM is mostly some sort of mix of Black Metal, Death Metal and Doom Metal – also utilizing sort of horror theme within their stuff, having dragged these certain types of dark and oppressive atmospheres into the songs extraordinarily well that overall manage to lift up the songs on the next level in terms of general interest and curiosity. With all these elements that reign through their stuff, I’m kinda certain they often get associated with the term Dark Metal due to being such a mixed pack musically. GOREM has much of the very same magic that bands like Tom G. Warrior’s TRIPTYKON has in them; sounding obscure, mystic and sort of distant – and basically setting up their very own rules and standards within their ‘darkened Metal’, ruling their own desolate world alone. The music in all 4 songs is very carefully composed; everything seems to be in place and Tepa’s deep grunts and occasional whispers truly add a whole new demonic dimension into the band’s already nightmar-ish sounding entity. My favorite song is probably ‘Death Shall Feast On Us’ due to being the most varied track off this promotional demo CD-R, maintaining the right balance between slow and ethereal atmospheres as well as virulent and violent Black Metal parts.
