South American Metal needs little description beyond “evil.” The entire Southern hemisphere, it seems, plays Metal in the most demented fashion possible. GORHOTH is no exception to that long standing rule. Now active again after a long hiatus, GORHOTH originally began in 1993. This CD, which collects their material between their formation in 1993, to the year 2000, presents a band in firm control of themselves. Without paying any attention to divisions in genre at the time, they wrote their songs with both albums like “Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism” and “Chemical Exposure” in mind. By wedding second wave Black Metal with pummeling Thrash, GORHOTH carves an interesting niche for themselves in Death Metal. This is the sort of Death Metal songwriting that sets a band apart from the lower class of copy cats. It’s puzzling that they haven’t been cited as an influence by modern South American Death Metal bands, but that’s likely because their demos, at the time of release, weren’t spread widely enough.
