Merciless Storm

So, you know when you go on those wild rollercoaster rides? The ones that are maybe a bit old but they are full of wild frenetic speed. The the twists, the turns. That small underlying sense that the coaster just might fly off the tracks at any moment? Then in an instant, its all over. That exhilarating moment in time is finished and you walk away full of adrenaline and wide eyed and you wonder why and how it can be over so quick. The latest release from MALICIOUS is exactly like that. At just 11 minutes runtime you are in for a burst of high speed off kilter energy and pure chaos — a wild freight train, both in the sound and the songs themselves. There is no subtlety involved in this wild rollercoaster ride. Some may find the unrestrained steamrolling sound to be off-putting or just plain distracting, but for myself, I was okay with it. It’s like that first jolt of coffee in the morning that gets you going. Now, the question I have is, will this stylistic approach work for a full 30 minutes or more? (I suppose the band’s 2020 debut full-length “Deranged Hexes” should answer that question – Frank) It’s great for the first four songs, but maybe a bit of variation for the long haul may be advised.
