After two demos and a great debut album, this Dutch Death Metal power trio has just released a 7" EP with two new songs, entitled "The View From My Ivory Tower". And all I can say is that, even with the short time they have been together as a band (formed in 2010), their material has constantly gotten better. When I found their debut album I was pleasantly surprised. Their music reminded me of bands such as ASPHYX, AUTOPSY and ORDER FROM CHAOS. So I was hooked on the spot. And this EP offers two new songs that mix in slow, doomy passages with a lot of atmosphere with mid paced Death Metal that borrows from D-Beat and maybe even Punk. So yes, VILLAINY shows a lot of evolution in their sound. Reiner’s vocals share a similarity with Mr. Van Drunen’s early work, but they are rawer, with some high pitched overtones. Brams’ drums have a lot of character and his playing fits the music perfectly. Nothing too fancy. Just solid and varied drumming that keeps everything nice and tight. Add to that the twangy bass sound and some really good and memorable riffs from Jeroen and you have a winning combination. The production is raw and beefy and adds a lot to the overall sound. If you like Death Metal, you won’t regret this excellent EP at all! Absolutely recommended!
