VISCERA
Cyclops
(Soulflesh Collector Records)
51:18min

I didn’t expect much when I received this CD, but damn how I was surprised when I listened to it for the first time. It starts quite strange with the 2 minute long starter ‘Focus: The First Eye’. Short introducing sounds and a few Italian words and then the Grindcore-massacre starts. Great vocal-lines, I have to admit. Tight music, screaming vocals, perfect sound, pretty original for a Grindcore band. Let’s wait what’s next… Next song is called ‘Keep On Bluesing Through The Stars’ – 12:20 minutes long, strange title! Never heard a Grindcore song which is that long. Did I say Grindcore? Totally wrong, as this song is no Grindcore at all anymore, though the screaming vocals are still there, at least at the beginning, the rest is… original, nothing more! The band says about “Cyclops”, their first full-length album by the way, that it is “more rock, seventy, psych and experimental but still heavy, bonecrusher and, more than all, never derivative” and that fits just perfect. VISCERA are using elements of so many different styles and sound, from my point of view, the closest to a band like ISIS with its noise elements, the long songs and endless song structures. The variety of the music of VISCERA is wide, they are adding rock elements to their music, the vocals are from time to time in a Grindcore way of singing, next moment they are “normal”. I even thought of hearing some Crustcore elements here and there (‘Iris Overburden’) but what I think I heard doesn’t really mean much as they offer such a big mishmash of influences in their songs that listening to this CD is a big experience and don’t get boring even after the 20iest listen – I know what I’m talking here as I crossed that border already and don’t get bored at all. In fairness I have to admit that I’m probably the wrong person to review this CD as this isn’t the music I usually listen to and I’m far away from being an expert here, but what I hear sounds amazing from the first to the last moment. I’d say, if you enjoy a band like e. g. ISIS and are looking for something a little bit more brutal this might be the perfect choice.
