“Inn Of The Vaticide” is the debut full-length album from US-based blackened Death Metal group BLACK EUCHARIST, delivering eight tracks of savage Christ-crushing Metal rife with maniacal riffing and pummeling drums. Initially released in June of 2023 by Stygian Black Hand on digital, cassette and vinyl formats, the most recent CD pressing was completed by Godz Ov War Productions in late October of 2023. Originally, the band went under the moniker of BLACK EJACULATE between 2018-2021, where they released the “Cum Soaked Messiah” demo before changing names. Opening with the track ‘Black Ejaculate,’ the listener is greeted with a mockingly read version of a segment from the Book of Exodus, as drums and bass enter to begin building the first steps into the album proper. Guitars enter to play a menacing chord progression atop the preaching, building a great deal of tension before a brief pause and an abrupt shift into rapid-double bass and a primary riff built with a single-note tremelo and offset by the chord progression used at the beginning of the song. The first impression of “Inn Of The Vaticide” is likened to a cross between early BELPHEGOR and current-era PROFANATICA. ‘Deflowering Jerusalem’ is loaded with riffs and transitions, and its driven primarily through a d-beat style drum rhythm in conjunction with conventional blastbeats. The riffs vary between fifth chord structures and menacing single-note flurries. ‘Drowned Flock’ uses a three-note tremolo sequence in tandem with conventional chords to create something that is very similar, sonically, to PROFANATICA and early 1990s HAVOHEJ. The title track starts off with slower progression before transitioning back into a d-beat / blastbeat cycle of drumming, accented with a single-note riff structures that create ugly, surging miasmal bursts of musical perversity. This is the first time on “Inn Of The Vaticide” where the bass guitar really steps forward and leaves an impression, heard very clearly during the single note tremolo sequences where it simply isn’t utilized to just double up the guitar. ‘The Soiled Crucifix’ is a synth and flute based instrumental that feeds into the lengthiest song on the album, ‘Broken Staff Of The Shepherd,’ which clocks in at over eight minutes. The atmosphere at the beginning of ‘Broken Staff Of The Shepherd’ can only be described as sinister, with a foreboding intro riff that uses a variety of consonant and dissonant chords. The early part of the track is a more mid-tempo approach in comparison with the rest of the album and shows the greatest examples of synchronicity within the band on the entire album. With a more narrative-based delivery in comparison to the rest of the album, across all eight minutes are constant transitions and multiple riff changes, really pushing the barriers away to allow the band to build something grotesquely special. ‘Ziziphus Pallurus’ wastes nothing in terms of time, going straight into a sinister barrage of riffs and furious drums, arguably the most straight-forward track on all of “Inn Of The Vaticide”, almost serving as a summary for the entire album. Closing the album is ‘A Foul Stench Lingers At Peor’, a track more musically structured towards pure Death Metal. The bass guitar work on this track stands out much like it did on the title track, shining through like a gleaming razor during the tremolo sequences where the sound isn’t so heavily saturated. Overall, if you’re into blackened Death Metal, this record should be on your radar. For fans of PROFANATICA, BELPHEGOR and even bands like INCANTATION and DISMA, thanks to the heavy Death Metal leanings exhibited throughout the record. It is worth mentioning that all the members of BLACK EUCHARIST are involved in a variety of other bands that are worth checking out as well.
