SEEDS OF TORMENT is a quite new German entity made up of Daniel Funke from SUFFERSYSTEM and DEFECTED DECAY and Marcel Schiborr from SYMBIONTIC, HRAUN and a good deal of other bands. Both musicians have a profound admiration of MORBID ANGEL and DISSECTION, and set out with those two bands in mind, when writing material for this debut album. We have guitar melodies en masse, though I never really get caught in a cold blazing vortex, as I do when listening to DISSECTION – the cold mysterious atmosphere is not present here. The template the songs are crafted upon is quite MORBID ANGELesque. Atmospheric parts, heavy double bass drumming and riffing, atmospheric parts and so on, though again, we do not get anywhere the masters. The vocals are mostly squeaky growls which lead us more towards traditional Death Metal than blackened Death Metal, which most of the music does as well. The vocals are quite fitting for the music. My favorite track on the album is ‘Cause Of Anguish’, a bastard of DEICIDE riffing, epic atmospheres of early GOD DETHRONED and well, a dose of melodic Swedish Death Metal, before it became too soft. The epic atmosphere, together with a melancholic touch, goes through the album with a good dose of brutality. I can’t really make up my mind about the album, there are some good parts, though there are some parts which kill momentum and atmosphere, just take all the breaks in ‘The Conjuring’. If the band wants to head in the direction of DISSECTION there are missing sweeping melodies, dark atmosphere and sheer evil and melancholy. Speaking of MORBID ANGEL we are missing brutality, depth and a darker atmosphere. “Those Who Fed The Maw” is running in many directions and never seems to get all the threads connected to a hard hitting and lasting album. There are a lot of great pace shifts and variations, a little MARDUK darkness, from their darkest period. All the right elements are present, just not assembled to a strong attack. With eyes closed and nothing else known it could sound like a trial of making AI writing and recording an album, as we have all the right inputs, a lot of different elements, fragmented lyrics with all the right phrases, it has just not been assembled quite powerful, nor recorded with memorable guitar tones or conviction.
