ACÉDIA
Fracture
(Les Acteurs De L'Ombre Productions)

I’ve been waiting to listen to this band for a bit. Firstly, I knew Les Acteurs De L’Ombre Productions would be kind enough to send a promo copy to our zine and that I had to keep an eye out for this. I had this tagged as “In Queue” for a bit now and voila, here it is! ACÉDIA hail from Quebec City, Canada and play an interesting mix of Progressive / Dissonant Black Metal. We need to spend a moment here to talk about their incredible guitar work throughout the album. Unlike the traditional Black Metal riffs, ACÉDIA opts to tell you a story throughout a song. Track # 1 ‘La Fosse’ feels like An Everflowing Stream (Haha!) but it catches your attention right away. The interplay between the stringed instruments stands out from the get go, both the guitars vie for the space in between and concoct a rather interesting rhythm. This almost feels like knitting in fast-motion, slowly piecing the rope one inch at a time with the other part of the song to take it forward. The beauty that ACÉDIA puts out is that they don’t stress on the atmosphere through the instruments directly, they use the vocals to channel the outer layers of the song to round up their message and it shows beautifully. Beneath the shrieks there’s a steady progression of notes that repeats in passages sometimes but keeps evolving as we go. For example, track # 2, ‘Mont Obscur’ from 2:10 is a guitar interplay that’s almost meditative, slowly tracing the listener into a web of dissonance albeit melodically. It’s a very interesting approach to songwriting that you normally do not come across. However, ACÉDIA makes it seem effortless on “Fracture”. You definitely have to listen to this with an open mind to appreciate the multilayer delivery of the music, I for one absolutely loved it. The interplay between the guitars and the bass is so polite, yet vicious that it begs for your attention for once at the least. Give “Fracture” a listen and write to the zine how you find it, I’d love to hear your feedback on this release. Les Acteurs De L’Ombre Productions has put out a solid slab and I’m definitely going to see ACÉDIA in the near future for sure. Black Metal fans who also love GORGUTS’ “Obscura” must not miss this!
