Splits are not that regular in circulation, so when two northern German forces playing Death Crust and Crossover speed infused Thrash and Hardcore, it’s fair to approach their collaboration with good interests. With delving into this split between PHANTOM CORPORATION and CATBREATH it becomes instantly clear that this isn’t just another take on, rather it’s an outright wrecking ball. Clocking in at a lean 29:39 minutes across 10 tracks, the split brings two distinct heavy hitting styles, where side A, titled as “Commando” belongs to PHANTOM CORPORATION, featuring veteran Leif Jensen (ex- DEW-SCENTED). Picking up right where late 2025’s full length “Time And Tide” left off, they unleashed five tracks of pure D-beat Crust infused solidly with punishing Death Metal and gritty old school Thrash. From the ferocious opener ‘Cursed Lands’ to the pummeling and groove driven ‘When All Roads Lead To Hell’ and the sprawling last track ‘Phantom Kommando’, the band leads the charge like a cleaver to the skull. There’s no gimmicks or pretentiousness here. It’s solid, hook driven D-beat energy fused with old school Death Metal grit. Over to side B titled as “Die By The Claw”, CATBREATH brings in four new tracks delivering a mix of crossover Thrash, Speed Metal and Hardcore Punk. Tracks like the opener ‘Play Dead’, ‘Inner Piece’ and the vicious ‘Feline Fatality’ release pure insanity. Just hear ‘Cross The Gate’ for their way of crossing into Death Thrash territory. And then have the surprise by their style of closing out the assault with a crushing and razorsharp cover of classic ‘Stand Up And Fight’ by EXCITER. The production throughout yields a sound that hits right in the gut with its raw and organic edges, leaving no breathing room nor any restraints. Yet, if you aren’t already sold on raw D-beat Crust or highly fueling Thrash, then this split offers little variations. On the other note, it’s a release that is strictly forged for the dedicated and faithful ones. And what sets this split apart from standard contemporary slop is the sheer energy, heaviness in impact and solid defiance both bands display across these 30 minutes. This berserk like assault not only flushes the mind with nostalgia and surely leaves a sore neck.
