Originally I wanted to start the review with the words that nobody sells and buys cassettes anymore. But then I realized that this is nonsense. It doesn’t matter whether compact disc or later digital formats, the good old cassette has never gone out of fashion, at least in the worldwide Heavy Metal underground. Meanwhile there are even quite a few labels that have specialized in cassettes. The first demo by ASHAKK XUL, simply entitled “Demo I” is released by the small label Putrid Prods. from Chile, which already released a few Chilean Death / Black bands. The four-track demo by the duo playing under the name ASHAKK XUL clearly falls into their loot scheme, since it is a newcomer outfit from Chile playing Death Metal, or to be more precisely, high-quality Death Metal. Chile is known for its strong and inexhaustible Death Metal scene, but I am surprised every time. The quarter of an hour moves musically somewhat between DRAWN AND QUARTERED, INCANTATION and IMMOLATION. But far away from an amateur level, instead songwriting and sound can easily compete with official studio releases of the mentioned bands. Of course, the question arises: if the demo sounds like this, how will the studio album sound then? I do not have a crystal ball and my card reading skills are also very limited, but it should be a surprise if ASHAKK XUL would not become a serious contender for the throne of Chilean Death Metal.
