Amid

I remember I had the chance to write the review of “Azketem”, their 2024 full-length and it is clear that this solo project from Berlin has kept its momentum going and its identity since those early days in 2018. The transition from the raw roots of the demos, to a more hazy and melancholic territory has been marching on release by release. This year we get a new chapter with the release of “Amid” through Darkness Shall Rise Productions, and it shows that the mastermind behind this entity is still deeply focused on building a very specific atmospheric world. This album here, is a dense journey that moves away from the typical frigid aggression you usually find in Black Metal. Instead, the music is filled with Gothic threads and a cavernous depth that feels like it is digging a hole straight into the ground. There is a lot of contrast that I find very interesting. You have meaty bass notes and screams that sound like they are coming from a fresh grave, but then these are met by clean vocals that add a strange listening experience and that I enjoy as hell. It also kind of took me to TRISTITIA’s music. Which I adore. I felt connected. I think the bands share a similar vision in terms of how they write music. The vibe of the album moves around light and dark, using raucous riffs and rhythmic authority to balance out moments of total despair and dissonance. It has a dreamy, subconscious quality to it, much like that hazy state of mind when you are just about to fall asleep. AZKETEM manages to keep the core of the music strong while bending their own rules with these clean vocal hums and haunting melodies. It is a piece of art that stays true to the underground spirit while offering a gem that is not easily found elsewhere. This album is definitely the kind of album that I would dive into if I’m going deep into a state of mind that is ethereal. I really liked this new album. Just listen to it. www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100030921802437, www.facebook.com/darknessshallriseproductions
