From the churning, dark heart of Vicenza, Italy, BLOODFIELD has forged their latest record “Homunculus Sapiens”. For this sophomore effort, they took some time off since their 2016 debut “Sinners Or Liars”. Undoubtedly their passion lies deep on the good old ways of doing Thrash Metal authentically and dragging the listener deep into the trenches of human despair. Thematically their debut record was built on sin. “Homunculus Sapiens” serves a deeper descent into the darkest corners of the mind and finding out why human do sin and what led to them. The concept centers on the brutality of existential struggle, mental illness and inner violence. Also what awakens the hidden demons that live in plain sight, lending an unnerving intimacy to the subject matter. Yet, within this storytelling, drenched in raw emotion, the band retains the crucial flash of hope, a lifeline in the overwhelming darkness. This thematic grimness is perfectly captured by the ten numbers recorded here, which are intriguingly arranged with the opener ‘Solitude Part 1’ and closer ‘Solitude Part 2’. And, as mentioned, the album opens by pulling immediately into a restlessness fueled spiral of madness, before taking a relentless thrashing course. ‘Feast For The Fleas’, ‘Just Like That’, ‘Ultimate Redemption’, ‘Pariah’ and ‘Murder And Funeral’ follow like rushing tornados. ‘Just Like That’ starts with an explosive outburst of alcohol driven rage, followed by some neck breaking wild hooks, aided by quick burst solos, which should remain in your head for very long. ‘Nightmare’ is a brutal narrative of regret that claws at the listener long after its final note. The grinding tension of ‘Pariah’ and the relentless speed of ‘Juggernaut’ are never letting up their furious pace and suddenly let you face the closer ‘Solitude Part 2’. After that, one would say that the band’s vision for a heavier, more evolution-oriented sound from the debut has been solidly realized. Given the fact that the record is self produced, showcasing their meticulous attention to detail and demands admirations. The lower tuning on the guitars provides a contemporary foundation, while the intricate and sheer groovy drumming pushes the intensity higher. The mastering by the legendary Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios, who finely ensures that the mix has the organic touch with a deadly sharpened edge, that aren’t giving away a fake or overproduced feeling like many modern productions. The resulting sound output resonates that throughout the record length. Those die hard fanatics who appreciate the punishing intensity of old TESTAMENT, SLAYER, DARK ANGEL or KREATOR should appreciate its sheer force and those new should be enticed for many repeats. The artwork skillfully crafted by Abedin Sayef (Thermometer Arts) serves as the perfect visual manifestation of the concept, which says enough that BLOODFIELD is growing as a force to be reckoned with in the legion of modern era Thrash Metal, that has it all to reach further. Join them on this descent into darkness, you won’t be able to look away. To find out more on the band and label, visit www.facebook.com/bloodfieldmetal or www.facebook.com/greatdanerecords.
