So, I have quite a few questions and opinions about this release, and those who know me will likely agree that’s not necessarily a good thing. These are the moments that always place me in a quandary. Should I start with the good or the bad? Let’s start with the negative, so in this way, we can wrap up things on a high note. First off, I’m sure all my loyal readers know I am not a fan of programmed drums. I understand out of necessity and for whatever reasons, it is something of a band / financial choice that is made. It just does not change the fact that we all end up hearing, and I am never enthused about the overly processed sound we are presented with. Add to the fact that with this compilation, things are remastered, so we get to hear that clinical sound brought to the forefront. Musically, it’s not half bad, you get a simplistic VITAL REMAINS with the matching monotone Glen Benton vocals interspersed with some Slam Death Metal squeals to add a bit of variety(?). I can say that with a better production and bringing the bass up in the mix, adding a human drummer, things would not be too bad overall. Another “question” I have is this. We have here a relatively new band, do we really need a compilation and remaster this early in their catalogue? As stated beforehand, the drum machine sound is a bit more prominent on the first full-length “Endless Torment” section and does not have such a grating sound on the second long-player “About The Prophecy”. Further questions lead to questionable songwriting and or presentation choices. Meaning that some songs end abruptly and you get to wondering if your sound system broke or something of the sort. Also, the weird / quirky sound samples that are used in some of the songs. Now on to the good. The riffing and some of the arrangements can be interesting and perk up your ears to what’s happening. Also, I really liked the updated cover art for this compilation. It has a sort of Dante’s Inferno quality about it. I enjoy this book immensely, and needless to say, it inspires me. The cover presented touches upon those imaginings I have. So, after all is said and done, I guess I mainly question the need for this particular release so soon after the band’s initial inception. I say practice and create more material, hone your skills, and come out firing on all cylinders on the next go-round. My standard motto most definitely comes into play here.
