DEINONYCHUS
Ode To Acts Of Murder, Dystopia And Suicide

Dutch based DEINONYCHUS are a well-known name in the European Black Metal scene, the band was founded back in 1992 and "Ode To Acts Of Murder, Dystopia And Suicide" is album number eight after a ten year hiatus. The first facet I noticed was the cover, to me it looks like a person walking down a (rail?)road. In combination with the album title it is no big surprise DEINONYCHUS are not presenting an old school back to the roots Black Metal album but more a mixture of Doom / Suicide Metal, smoothly continuing the way of the predecessor "Warfare Machines". When it comes to writing a review for an album of that genre, well, it is not easy at all. At least not for me. Listening to sad, depressive, mournful and sorrowful music when you are feeling relaxed, happy, balanced and easygoing is by no means easy. So blame it on my mood (or whatever), but for a running time of 45 minutes there is too much idle running. The opener ‘Life Taker’ works very well, the sparingly used piano is creating a really gloomy mood. "Ode To Acts Of Murder, Dystopia And Suicide" is finished with the last track ‘Silhouette’, a good up-tempo Black Metal tune. But in between? Standard songwriting, ordinary riffs and trivial vocal performance. Fans of the band or people interested in blackened Doom Metal may take a listen, but for me this album sounds sterile and lifeless. www.facebook.com/deinonychusofficial, www.mykingdommusic.net
