DEROGATORY from California is another underground hopeful playing old school Death Metal. After a melodic intro the first punch comes in form of ‘Into The Depth Of Time’ reminding me of good old DEICIDE or MORBID ANGEL. The blast beasts support the technical riff massacre changing speed from slow to fast, back to slow again. The growls and screams fit perfect into the music and the leads are on a perfect level. Brilliant work after only 3(!!) years of band history. ‘Cryopreservation’ comes up with high speed blast beats, deep fast growls and fast double bass, technically solid and brilliant work with typical old school Death Metal guitar riffs and leads and lyrics. The title track ‘Above All Else’ is another brilliant reminder of the Florida Scene of the 90s and very enjoyable groovy Death Metal with a solo, reminding me of good old DEATH. ‘Immortal Divine’ and ‘Foretold In My House Of Seance’ are same 90s style Florida Death Metal played precise and on a high technical level and show again the high skills of the musicians. The blast beat ridden uptempo ‘Cenotaph’ must be a killer live with another fine solo, and I enjoy the parts where the bass guitar can be heard in the same way, DEATH used to do it. ‘Twisted Aeons Of Burning Galaxy’ is more Heavy Metal sounding and slows down again while ‘To Escape What Is Now’ shows a more technical site and again DEATH (or even CYNIC) can be stated as influence. All in all a good album I really enjoy, not sounding too old school. Just the production could be a bit more powerful but I trust this album was just the beginning of something bigger.
