This one caught me off guard… when I think of Unique Leader I think of ultra brutal grinding Death of the highest caliber such as Deeds of Flesh, Pyaemia (RIP), Disavowed, Brutus and Severed Savior among others. I popped this one in and I got something completely different. It kind of sounded like a mix of Immolation, Drawn and QuaRtered (minus the overly satanic imagry) and a dash of Necrophagist. Pretty fucking different and very refreshing if you ask me. The vocals are just fucking perfect, deep and gruff, and the drums are solid and tastefully done but the highlight of this CD is the guitars. You’ve just got these excellent riffs throughout the whole CD with leads à la Necrophagist sprinkled throughout. A lot of thought was put into the songwriting as these songs will distinguish themselves easily to the discerning Metalhead. While the guitars might be the highlight of this CD the MVP goes to the production. On a review for a different Unique Leader album I mentioned that they have a very high standard for the production of their products. This one is no different in terms of quality but it is definitely different in its execution. It is on the opposite end of the spectrum from its label mates. Think… organic (like Drawn and QuaRtered’s production). The guitars sound nice and crunchy/dirty while the drums sound real (as not everything is triggered and then protools is used to make it anally perfect). This production gives this album a certain charm. It just wouldn’t sound as good to me if it had an ultra clean sound. I can only commend Unique Leader for expanding its horizons if this is the quality of music they plan on releasing. Be on the lookout for this band from Sweden, as far as I know this was their debut full length. Very impressive for a debut. If you got some money to burn and want to check out a new band give these guys a shot. Listen to an MP3, get info about the band, and buy a CD here: www.uniqueleader.com.
