DOOMSDAY from Chicago is a project of members and former members of NACHTMYSTIUM, GOATWHORE, BONES and THE GATES OF SLUMBER. So not really a newcomer at all considering the musical history of the members. Also the material is already from 2011 and was released on Disorder Recordings in 2012.The self-titled debut is a big surprise for me as the members offer material of highest quality and unleash their apocalyptic vision of Metal over us. The musical range and the past influences of the members can clearly be be heard but they mix their influences to a hellish, fresh sounding promising version of blackend Death Metal with influences of Black / Doom and Crust. Recorded within only 6 days in the winter of 2011, their debut starts with ‘She Will Be The One’, a Black Metal influenced aggressive punked hymn of Death / Crust with blastbeats and dark riffing. This mix might sound weird at first stage but it’s consistent while listening to it. All styles are put together to a hellish logical mix. Followers ‘The Punishment’ and ‘Bring Down The Knife’ show the direction the band wants to take. Death Metal influenced by bands like BOLT THROWER or even the Swedish gods like ENTOMBED in slight notes, but presented a lot quicker combined with Punk / Hardcore influenced rhythm guitars and melodic lead guitars of Swedish school. The aggressive shouts of vocalist Zion fit perfect to the presented music, shouting out all his anger and desperation, no matter if the speed is high or slowed down by guitarists Jeff and Jon. Also I really enjoy the Doom Metal references brought into their music. The second slowed down part of ‘Bring Down the Knife’ is simply a blast, while ‘Black Judas’ with its fast Death / Thrash Metal simply destroys everything with its dirty rotten aggressive sound. ‘I Kill Everything I Fuck’ is a cover of American Punk legend GG Allin and the name is program for the sound of DOOMSDAY.
