Finland’s EXTINGUISHED put out two deadly EPs, one in 2022 and one in 2025, both getting a tape release by US based label Caligari Records. Now Morbid Chapel Records, based in Poland, is uniting these two EPs into one compilation CD, just barely crossing into LP territory by less than a minute. Still it feels like you’re getting enough to satisfy your Death Metal hunger and maybe even ask them if they also serve dessert. EXTINGUISHED possess the sort of bouncy riffs used by contemporary bands like TOMB MOLD, UNDERGANG or TORTURE RACK and informed by legacy Death Metal act AUTOPSY. At times it feels like the whole band is putting their combined weight into the groove like a vile jam session, they must have really enjoyed playing some of these riffs. You can feel the grip of AUTOPSY in the presence of the bass guitar in the mix and the way it works with the double bass kick, which sounds completely natural and unblemished by triggers. Some of the mid paced and also busy parts also exemplify this. You get a raw natural vibe from the way these songs were recorded. Some of the tones on these instruments sound especially foul, the distortion almost fizzling out and at other times sounding quite screechy, just listen to the intro to ‘Unforeseen Consequences’. The vocals sound mostly unintelligible and drenched in reverb and delay, but executed to great effect. The drumming employs both driving skank beats and bouncy double kick beats and busy fills and accents sessions. There are also guitar leads, both the reverby trance inducing ones attesting EXTINGUISHED’s Finnish provenance and also quirky fast paced solos.
