HAPPY FARM
Just Pig It

It’s been some time since I reviewed a Grindcore band. And Portugal’s HAPPY FARM is a nice choice to get back on track. Grindcore and Doom Metal are two of my fave Metal sub genres and I still think that, to this day, they have been seriously overlooked by the majority of the Metal community. Now, to get the obvious out of the way, yes, HAPPY FARM deals with farm animals and everything around them in a humorous (and also bad) way, so to speak. But past that odd choice for their name paired with this style, this is good old Grindcore done the right way. HAPPY FARM is a trio consisting of Miguel Seewald (Bass), Nuno P. (Guitars) and Tiago Cardoso (Vocals) with the aid of some (surprisingly good) programmed drums. And all I can say is that these guys really know what they are doing sound wise. The drums don’t sound too plastic, the guitars have a really heavy and chunky tone and the pounding bass fills in nicely to round up a great production. It’s modern but not to be point of being "massive" or overproduced, so "Just Pig It" still has that rawness that can’t be separated from the usual recordings of this style since its inception some decades ago. They also have some Death Metal influenced parts, but most of them are used just to add variety to the music. The album is 27 minutes long, so as soon as you start really enjoying it, it’s over. So far I’ve heard it 4 times without getting bored. And that is just an indicator of how well crafted this music is. From what I checked they have no previous material, so this is their first proper recording. And although being new to the scene as a band (since some of its members have played in other bands), "Just Pig It" covers every aspect related to the genre. 17 songs of full speed ahead riffing and blast beats, combined with slow segments and really good groove ridden parts that provoke instant headbanging. The longest song is 3:53 but most of them clock between 28 seconds and 2 minutes. Totally recommended if you are looking for some new Grindcore to bang your head to.
