There’s something to be said for consistency. From beginning to end, this Black Metal band hailing from Chicago, Illinois doesn’t waste time with experimentation or song flow on their first full-length. The opening track ‘Sheperd’s Twilight’ begins with the angst we all want and need from a Metal band. Aamon’s vocals are dead on, and the fury-driven guitars of B Stovhell (beast of hell… get it?) pull the listener into the oncoming abyss. ‘Your God Has Betrayed You’ continues the onslaught. The only minor complaint I have is in the middle of track 4 (‘Ov Plagues’) which is interrupted by a religious chorus and screaming (sampled in another Black Metal album I’ve heard previously), which is to me unnecessary, and disrupts the flow of an otherwise solid album. However, track 5 (‘Bestial Act Of Divine Destruction’) jumps right back into the pit of hell to deliver bone crushing Black Metal chaos the way we like it. The album is wrapped up nicely with ‘Offensive Of Darkness’, confirming that beginning to end, HELLWAFFE has what it takes to be a lasting Black Metal band.
