JOURS PÂLES, a French Black Metal act, was formed back in 2019. Originally known as ASPHODELE, they started out as a post Black Metal act. However, the following year they renamed themselves as JOURS PÂLES after their debut release and embraced a more consistent Black Metal sound with leaning on being atmospheric. In the past five years, the band has undergone various line-up changes, with Spellbound being the only constant member. He takes on the role of the main vocalist, lyricist and keyboard player. This stability has given the band a unified approach to their music and their latest album “Dissolution” shows signs of growth and evolution in comparison to their previous two full lengths “Éclosion” (2021) and “Tensions” (2022). This record features a total of nine tracks, delivering forty-five and a half minutes of raw and furious atmospheric Black Metal, infused with the rebellious spirit that the French scene is known for. It also sees a subtle return to their ASPHODELE roots, incorporating elements of post Black Metal, particularly noticeable in the increased use of guitar solos, which effectively display the skills of Stéphane, the current guitarist. Although, the essence of post Black Metal exudes certain similarities in most releases in current era, however, the addition of guitar solos complements the aggressive vocals, and helps infusing the modern Black Metal sound with a breath of Punk attitude. This will be evident in numbers like ‘Noire Impériale’, ‘Les Lueurs D’Autoroutes’, ‘Réseaux Venins’ and ‘Une Mer Aux Couleurs Désunions’. This creative variability offered by them can be the deciding factor of whether this record remains a memorable one to the listener’s ears. And, surely with these interesting variations, the shift in atmosphere makes the music more angsty and relatable, even if you do not understand French. It is a solid recommendation for fans of the genre and for all curious onlookers of always noteworthy French underground.
