The Japanese band name can best be translated as “Mr. Poop”, which is not necessarily the typical Black Metal moniker. If the valued readership thinks of Grindcore, they are not that wrong. However, you would be wrong if you thought that a band with a Japanese name and Japanese song titles comes from Japan. Instead, KUSO SAN is a one-man project from Costa Rica and “Yokai” the first demo. Four songs in just under eleven minutes show that KUSO SAN are moving at typical Grindcore speed, i.e. pretty fast. The vocals are divided into grunts and rasps, luckily the frog noise and pig squeal vocal style are completely missing. Straight from the eighties, the guitar sets off a firework display reminiscent of early NAPALM DEATH or CARCASS times. Every now and then Death Metal riffs sneak in, but without becoming too dominant. Luckily, the production, recorded at a place called “The Shadow Chamber Studio”, sounds damn eighties, especially the guitar sound. So, if you still listen to the debut of TERRORIZER or the first releases of the above mentioned British Grindcore pioneers, then “Yokai” offers a neat and entertaining listening experience.
