Kansas City based LIGEIA originally started out as NEPENTHE in the early 90s, at the time still consisting of Chris Overton (drums), Patrick Brown (guitars), Alex Blume (bass) and a vocalist named Joe. This line-up recorded a 3 song demo in 1993 ("The Conqueror Worm"), which they didn’t spread much. Shortly after the recordings Joe was asked to leave and Alex took over the vocals as well. In 1994 contract negotiatons for a possible release of a 7" / MCD started, but unfortunately that never turned into reality. In 1995 the band also parted ways with Alex and renamed the whole project LIGEIA (which was supposed to be the title of NEPENTHE’s EP). In late 1995, early 1996 new material for the "In Death Overshadow Thee" EP was recorded but shortly after LIGEIA was put on ice as Chris decided to join VULPECULA (the band of Chuck Keller from ORDER FROM CHAOS / ARES KINGODOM). But in April of 1996 Eternal Darkness Records still went for it and released the band’s "Ligeia" 7" EP and most recently also Buio Omega secured the rights for the release of the "In Death Overshadow Thee" EP, which is now available in a strictly limited edition of 500 copies. The two featured songs, ‘Oblivion (The Joyous Dead Man)’ and ‘Cycles Of Fire’ (the latter with lyrics written by Chuck) are fine examples of extremely ugly and raw music, definitely rooted in the in the early days of this genre, with little similarities to classic ORDER FROM CHAOS (in terms of the overall rough sound and intensity), heavy old school Thrash and grim Black Metal. So, this is definitely not of interest for the mainstream listener, but a nice little gem for everyone into true to the bone blackend Death Metal.
