NACHTHEEM
Nacht, Zij Met Ons...

The Dutch Black Metal scene seems to be a bit overlooked – or isn’t it established enough to carry itself? I have been stumbling upon great bands, the last 25 years or so, though many of those bands have been short-lived or haven’t kept standards or have been evolving crazily away from their roots, which can be fine, though a hard point to establish a scene upon. NACHTHEEM hails from Holland, if you haven’t guessed it by now, or have come across their demo. The demo which I am reviewing right now, released by Terratur Possessions on CD and LP, “Nacht, Zij Met Ons…” was first released digitally and then on cassette by Tour De Garde. Tour De Garde did also release a splendid split with NACHTHEEM and Swedish WIRDHA. We are getting a healthy dose of icingly cold Black Metal, crushing soundscapes, dissonant guitar riffs, bleak melodic lines, quite simple rhythm structures, that keep the madness in hold. The vocals are evil and far away from this world. Mysterious frustration is being painfully screamed into the dark of night. There are some inspirations from the early second wave of Black Metal, especially a couple of the Norwegian bands shine through occasionally, though in a stylistic manner. On top of the Black Metal assault, we get, intertwined into the songs, deep ambient parts. We get it in bits and pieces to summon a certain atmosphere. We get long pieces of atmospheric soundscapes, bursting into Black Metal. We get pure ambient beauty and mysticism. We get so much aggression, frustration, beauty, melancholy, mysticism put into these four tracks on this demo. All presented in well written and well composed and performed tracks. NACHTHEEM is a pleasant surprise on a warm summer day, it brought fall right into my heart. The bleak and cold darkness on this album, cloaked in mysticism and a tad beauty and sheer aggression to top it – it works quite well. I’m a fan. On top of it, the band is about ready with a new split with fellow Dutch (?) MOFT, where both bands helped each other out to get the tracks created and finished, and damn ‘Dromende Goden’ from NACHTHEEM is amazing. “Nacht, Zij Mit Ons…” is a release and NACHTHEEM a band all into Black Metal, heavily dark and atmospheric music and even Ambient / Dungeon Synth fans must check out. https://nachtheem.bandcamp.com, www.facebook.com/terraturpossessions
