Canadian Folk / Black / Death / Thrash Metal act NORDHEIM – featuring 4 obviously pretty young lads, have finally got enough songs together for their debut full-length studio album, which has been titled as “Lost In The North”. The band was formed in 2006 – and even if some people may still consider them some sort of rookies for whatever reasons there are to call them that way, these 4 Canadian fellows are able to show at least some tiny glimpses of their mature and sharp songwriting skills on their debut record. Musically, the NORDHEIM fellows have surely made some nightly and friendly visits to the camps of such names as FINNTROLL, ENSIFERUM, ENSLAVED and let’s even add early MOONSORROW to the same pile; trying to create the similar type of heavily Folk-tinged Metal by using only guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and a campfire type of sing-along choirs for their own purpose – and surprisingly well even succeeding at that. These talented Canadian Metallers have rejected a whole arsenal of additional yet typical instruments that many other today’s Folk / Pagan / Viking Metal bands do use actively within their own music; i.e. such instruments as accordion, mouth harp, mandolin, banjo, etc., are completely missing from this Canadian NORDHEIM’s record – without giving any kind of cheap or lowering effect onto their stuff they have done on “Lost In The North”. As some wise man has once stated sometimes – ‘less is more’, those aforementioned 3 words pretty much living up to some of those expectations that could be targeted to this opus as well. The songs on this record actually do flow darn well and smoothly, sounding catchy and all against all those prejudices I may have had about this release at first – and even after several more, concentrated spinnings of this 10-track disc, my opinion still stands the same: “Lost In The North” is a good record nonetheless, offering more than just a solid sample about these Canadians’ songwriting skills and talent to turn your attention to their side. So, by all means, do check them out and be surprised by yourself, too. www.reverbnation.com/nordheim, www.myspace.com/maplemetal
