In fact, it is a clown on the cover. Pretty unusual, at least for me. Not that clowns and Heavy Metal are mutually exclusive, but for a band that locates itself in Post Black Metal / Funeral Doom it is quite strange. But otherwise the music on this EP is far away from usual schemata, even if nowadays almost everything is summarized under that buzzword Post Black Metal. In fact only the last track ‘Hope’ has something in common with bands like AMORPHIS or ENLSAVED on their newer albums. The rest is simply not Metal. If you subtract the grunting vocals, the music (besides mentioned song) is a weird mixture of ambient synthesizer tunes and some guitar riffs from time to time. Still I am wondering if there is a central musical theme, because everything seems put together in a very sloppy manner. To me it sounds like a patchwork of non-fitting musical components. Info is given that the lyrics deal with the remorse people feel when they are caught in a vortex of self-generated karma. Blinded by anger, greed and worry. Step by step on the road to destruction. But in no way this interesting concept is reflected in the music. Nonetheless there are some interesting moments if you consider yourself open-minded and since “Show My Mercy” is the first release by OBSEQUIAL JOY from Taiwan it is worth a listen for all those who dare to look beyond the edge of the plate.
