Personally I heartedly disagree with the ambition ONE STEP BEYOND try to convey with their music, which is “originality through diversity”. Well, I do not think that more different stylistic elements combined make better or more fascinating music – it is the song, its structure and feeling what really counts! And I still do not get the idea of mixing Grind or Death Metal with Funk, Rock, Reggae, Dub, Jazz or Ska – that is just fucking ridiculous. It is always hard to talk about music you can not empathise or understand, but I guess that friends of CEPHALIC CARNAGE or CIRCLE OF DEAD CHILDREN might be able to. In fact I think that people who like such sounds should get along with “Life Imitates Art” pretty good, although you will have to live with a drum PC. Despite that the album offers wicked, weird and twisted music blending the aforementioned styles within still catchy, never too fast or even chaotic tunes. A real plus-point is the singer Justin Wood, who has a remarkable, natural and brutal sounding voice. The production is extremely professional – crisp and crystal clear – and summa summarum “Life Imitates Art” should satisfy everyone, who does not care about the stylistic boundaries of extreme Metal.
