“De Profundis” is the second full length album from the long-standing Brazilian band PENTACROSTIC, an obscure and underrated entity active since 1989. The original edition was released in 1996 by the Brazilian label Hellion Records and now has been re-released by Caverna Abismal Records from Portugal. The style is old school Death Metal with doomy parts and the addition of keyboards too. The atmosphere is gloomy, occult and dark with a good balance between semi-fast parts and slower ones. When you start to listen to “De Profundis”, you immediately understand that we’re in South America in the middle of the ‘90s due to the raw and sloppy production. That’s an extra point because the crude approach, both for the recording and the song structures, creates a very obscure and esoteric feel to the whole album, that consists of nine tracks for almost 40 minutes. Musically speaking, PENTACROSTIC have some vibes in common with other South American bands such as PENTAGRAM from Chile, MORTEM from Peru and especially their fellow countrymen MYSTIFIER. The fast sections aren’t particularly extreme and are more focused on d-beat passages, whereas the majority of the structures are built on mid-tempos. You can hear some mistakes in the rhythm parts (double bass) and the keyboards background, which do not disturb, on the contrary these inaccuracies enhance a killer demo touch to the final result. If you miss the old days when Death Metal was spontaneous and true, yes, perhaps trivial and naive, but still genuine and emotional, “De Profundis” is a good chance to go back in time and pay tribute to a pioneering act from the very early Brazilian scene. www.instagram.com/pentacrostic, www.facebook.com/cavernaabismalrec
