PENTHOS
Erevos
(Darkness Shall Rise Productions)
40:16min

“Erevos” is the second full length album by the Greek band PENTHOS. Here we have almost 40 minutes of traditional and primitive Black Metal in its purest form, more rooted in the Scandinavian sound than the Hellenic one. Too bad since I’m a great fan of old school bands like early VARATHRON and ROTTING CHRIST. However, the result is pretty interesting, especially if you’re looking for something true and not particularly original. Here you won’t find any innovation or unnecessary frills, but nine simple tracks of Black Metal from the ‘90s with a mixture of fast euroblast parts and introspective slowdowns enriched by a touch of melody. Unfortunately the melancholic, occult and obscure athosphere of the Greek traditions are completely lacking here, except for part of the concept and titles inspired by classic mythology. The production is not raw, but not even so polished; we have a good compromise that won’t turn the purists’ noses up. The approach is pretty minimalistic and brutal with a good amount of very cold guitar riffs that fit perfectly with the precise drumming and the agonizing screamings. If I had to find a parallelism with a Greek band, I would say that “Erevos” is pretty close to the early works of LEGION OF DOOM, that during the ‘90s released some killer albums such as “Kingdom Of Endless Darkness” and “For Those Of The Blood”. In conclusion, PENTHOS is for sure a competent and serious band when it comes to play traditional Black Metal in the vein of early DARKTHRONE and MARDUK, but they do not have enough personality to achieve a highest level in terms of personality. www.facebook.com/penthosband, www.facebook.com/darknessshallriseproductions
