There are always times in doing reviews that I come across a band that is completely new to me, and it gives me that experience of wonder. Will it be something special or just a waste of plastic? Much like we all have gone through, mainly when we step into a record store and are perusing the bins for something new to strike our fancy. Be it the cover art or a recommendation, we all take a chance on something new or unknown on occasion. With TÚMULO, I have experienced the same sense of wonder and curiosity. I have never heard of the band, and although they are located in Sweden, the lyrics and titles, and the band name itself are all in Portuguese. Transplants perhaps? So upon pressing play, you can color me surprised, in a good way, mind you. So let me back track a little bit, I’m a huge fan of Thrash Metal, and I do enjoy many of its sub-genres. Bands like WRAITH, TOXIC HOLOCAUST, SADISTIC FORCE, NIFELHIEM and CRUEL FORCE all strike a chord with me and get me raising the devil horns on numerous occasions. This band and its sound are heavily influenced by, and if not derivative of, the aforementioned bands. So here is the thing on my part that makes this such an enjoyable listen. Yes, they have the same approach as my faves above, but they play with such energy and enthusiasm that it’s hard not to get caught up in the whirlwind of its blackened Speed Metal energy. Plus, and this is the main kicker for me, is that you can hear the bass! Granted, the band is a trio, and it’s to be expected, but the production highlights this fact and gives all members their due and time to shine. When you are a cobweb-ridden, crotchety ol geezer like me, this can still get me thrashing about the room in a mosh pit of my own imagining. It’s such a cool personal (sound) thing for me, and its presence is joyfully felt on my part. So yes, nothing here is going to change the world. It is single-minded in its approach and minimal variety, but you cannot resist the tidal wave of force that comes screaming out of your speakers. So maybe all you fans of the genre, and notably the bands I have spoken of, it would do well for you to look into the band. Who knows, they may move atop others in what could be your new go-to. www.facebook.com/cavernaabismalrec, www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100088398805478
