Demology
(Svart Records)
84:50min
For those whose hearts beat solely to the slow, funereal pulse of true Doom, the name UNHOLY should evoke a visceral reverence. This mammoth 84:50min compilation, “Demology” is less a collection of ancient artifacts and more an essential codex detailing the birth of Finnish Death Doom as an avantgarde force. The two CD set chronologically presents their legendary demos, starting with 1990’s “Procession Of Black Doom”. The title track immediately establishes their mission, which is primal, heavy as hell devotion to the dooming mantra forged by BLACK SABBATH, CELTIC FROST and the American masters SAINT VITUS and PENTAGRAM. It’s pure, crushing Doom, yet imbued with an unholy feeling that elevates it beyond mere tribute. Tracks like ‘Apocalyptic Terror’ and ‘Death Will Rule’ are lengthy trips into the unknown, carried by compositions built on mystical, sometime wailing to sometime weeping sounding guitar tones, mind bending bass lines and smoke soaked vocals over Doom inducing drum patterns. The first CD closes with the final tracks of “Demo 11.90”, which include ‘Alone’. This cut introduces a medieval synth element, adding a depth that pushes the sound firmly into the Death Doom zone. It’s unique, leaving the mind in awe of what has just been exposed. The second CD consists of eight more tracks. First four tracks come from “Demo 11.90” Demo #2, which was released back in 1990. They are also forged by the that slithering beast like doomish essence that the band able to capture in the earlier demos. The true treasure, however, lies in the final four tracks, which constitute 1992’s “Trip To Depressive Autumn”. This demo, praised by Albert Witchfinder of REVEREND BIZARRE as “the best recording ever done in Finland, of any genre”, shows the band perfecting their blend of Death, Doom and esoteric Black Metal atmosphere. This is where UNHOLY truly carved their lonely, exquisite path into the celestial forests and psychic graveyards of extreme Metal. Mastered with vitality and clarity by Jaime Gomez Arellano, “Demology” successfully captures the total essence these Finnish maniacs conveyed. Whether you are already known or unknown to the existence of UNHOLY, this compilation is a tremendous, essential impression of a band that dared to be slower, heavier and darker than their idols. Available formats include the Svart exclusive 2 LP black / white marble vinyl, 2 LP limited transparent red vinyl, 2 LP classic black vinyl and the 2 CD edition.
