WALL OF SLEEP

From the ashes of the Hungarian band MOOD (about which I know nothing, except that they played Doom Metal), please welcome WALL OF SLEEP. I guess the band’s monicker tells the tale enough: yes, you’ve got it right, WALL OF SLEEP is about pure Heavy Doom in the way of BLACK SABBATH. This MCD is their very first effort revealed to an unsuspecting world, and it is a very nice slab of gargantuan riffs and morose vocals, with a strong 70’s touch. Like in all the best records of the genre, the rhythm section will make your stereo shaking with infra sounds, while the guitar shines with an Iommesque aplomb. Gabor Holdhampf’s voice reminds me of Victor Griffin’s one, a compliment coming from me. So no wonder if I tell you that a track like ‘Hands Of Dust’ could have been included in the PLACE OF SKULLS fantastic debut. Of course, it is a little to soon to judge the full potential of the band, three originals and one cover being not enough to do just that. And the choice of the song to cover appears a little too safe: I don’t see the point to play ‘The Wizard’ by you know who one more time, complete with the infamous mouth organ (uh, how I hate this instrument). A far less known Heavy Rock track from the 70’s would have done the job. Considering the extreme quality of WALL. OF SLEEP I see only a very bright future for them, and I eagerly await for the first full length. For the moment, give full support to this band, they truly deserve it.
