Costa Rican one-man Black Metal arsenal AHLSPIESS has cranked out his first EP. Led by multi-instrumentalist Abholos the band is a part of the newer generation of Black Metal bands from Latin America. From what I gathered the band has been around 2018 and has released one demo and three singles since 2019. Let’s dive into this EP and find out what AHLSPIESS is bringing to the table. ‘Rebellious Impulse’ lives up to its name. A relentless borage of ANGELCORPSE inspired music with guttural vocals to give that War Black Metal atmosphere. The drumming is on point with a blur of thunderous attack. Things slow down to a mid tempo heavy on the follow up track ‘The Mystagogue’. The guitars are sharp and catchy with quick changes in tempo from time to time on the song. This one was my favorite of the four songs on this release. Next up is ‘Evolution Meam’ and this one picks up where ‘Rebellious Impulse’ left off with its machine gun guitars, blast beats, and solos providing an extra notch. The final song of this EP is ‘All Aeons Past’ and musically provides a summary of the previous three songs. Jumping around tempos while not losing the overall delivery of the song. I got hints of INCANTATION type guitars throughout the EP. Clocking in at under 17 minutes this is a nice EP to check out. You get range with the sub-genre styles of Black Metal it cranks out with its four tracks. You have your War Metal, Melodic Metal, ’90s era vibe, back to War Metal, and back to Melodic Metal. I think it makes it for a nice well-rounded preview of what the band has to offer and encompasses several musical styles that you can’t help but cast a wide net of listeners with “Liminis Cultus”.
